Zwischenzug: insert a forcing move

Insert a forcing intermediate move to flip an exchange or gain tempo.

Zwischenzug

A forcing move (often a check or direct threat) inserted before the expected recapture to improve the outcome.

Decisive intermediate check

Black threatens the intermediate check ...Qd1+: the white king must go to a2, the queen then captures the knight on a4 and, because it was check, will take the rook on b5 next. White loses two major pieces despite the initial material edge.
  • d1: Intermediate check
  • a4: Knight falls
  • b5: Rook falls next

Principles

Play a check or unstoppable threat before recapturing to get a better version of the exchange.

  • Look for free checks
  • Don't leave loose pieces
  • Calculate to the end

Pitfalls

Skip the zwischenzug if the final recapture no longer works or costs too much material.

  • Check opponent mates
  • Avoid reflex moves
  • Confirm material balance

When to spot it

Zwischenzugs often appear in capture sequences on the same square.

  • Forcing check in-between
  • Loose enemy piece after the sequence
  • Fork or pin possibilities right after

Training routine

Practice inserting forcing moves into your calculation.
