Discovered attack: unleash hidden pressure

Use discovered attacks to create double threats and win material.

Discovered attack

A discovered attack happens when one piece moves away, revealing an attack from a piece behind it.

Discovered check

The knight on e5 can move (e.g., Ng6+) and the rook on e1 gives a discovered check on the king on e8 (white king on g1, rook on e1).
  • e5: Front piece moves
  • e1: Rook delivers the discovered attack
  • e8: King in check

Why it wins

One move, two threats; opponents often cannot parry both.

  • Discovered checks for tempo
  • Double attack potential
  • Best on open lines

How to spot

Look for back-line pieces already aiming at king or heavy pieces.

  • King on a rook/bishop line
  • Front piece creates its own threat
  • Prefer forcing moves
